We regularly receive queries and requests from people looking to uncover more about local people and places, especially in connection with family history. While we’re always happy to provide photographs or copies of documents from our archives, we aren’t usually able to assist with building full family trees.
But don’t worry—there are some great resources online and locally that can help!
Start with Online Family History Sites
If you’re just getting started or looking to fill in some missing branches of your family tree, these genealogy websites are a good place to begin:
- Ancestry – A subscription-based service with access to census records, birth/marriage/death indexes, military records, and more.
- Find My Past – Offers a range of UK-specific records and newspapers, also subscription-based.
- FreeBMD – A free resource for searching UK Births, Marriages, and Deaths from civil registration indexes.
Local Help: Glamorgan Family History Society
If you’re researching family connections in Glamorgan or the wider South Wales area, we highly recommend getting in touch with the Glamorgan Family History Society. They’re a knowledgeable group based in Aberkenfig.
They run open days on alternate Tuesdays, where anyone can drop in and ask for help. It’s a friendly, informal setting where experienced volunteers can guide you through the process of tracing your Welsh roots.
If more extensive help is needed, they may request a small donation or fee to cover the time and resources used.
Location: Aberkenfig Resource Centre (ARC)
