{"id":3185,"date":"2020-09-27T23:56:25","date_gmt":"2020-09-27T20:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.garwheritage.co.uk\/?p=3185"},"modified":"2020-09-27T23:56:25","modified_gmt":"2020-09-27T20:56:25","slug":"lockdown-walks-a-poem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.garwheritage.co.uk\/wordpress\/?p=3185","title":{"rendered":"Lockdown Walks- a poem"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Rona Cracknell, Summer 2020<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">My solitary walks are in the local cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">I read&nbsp;as I&nbsp;start&nbsp;walking &#8211; there\u2019s a plaque beneath each tree:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAged 21\u201d,&nbsp;\u201cKilled on the Somme\u201d&nbsp;or he&nbsp;was&nbsp;\u201cLost at sea\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond&nbsp;this avenue of trees&nbsp;commemorating strife<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">Are further&nbsp;texts remembering&nbsp;a loving family life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSacred to the memory of a beloved wife\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">The graveyard\u2019s on a hillside, the slope is fairly steep,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">And where it&nbsp;flattens out, the tiny&nbsp;graves could make me weep:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur baby son\u201d, \u201cAged&nbsp;14 days\u201d&nbsp;and many&nbsp;\u201cBorn asleep\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">The family&nbsp;plots, so numerous, are&nbsp;oft engraved with rhyme<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">Extolling virtue, fortitude, perfection, love sublime&nbsp;&#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And meek acceptance of a higher power \u2018calling time\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">They&nbsp;cling to&nbsp;a belief, a faith, thatdeath is not in&nbsp;vain,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGone to&nbsp;a&nbsp;better place\u201d, \u201cWith God\u201d&nbsp;\u201cOur loss is Heaven\u2019s&nbsp;gain\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"s13 wp-block-paragraph\">I walk among these headstones, speaking love,concealing pain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rona Cracknell, Summer 2020 My solitary walks are in the local cemetery.
