  1. Although this is a fabulous piece of work honouring Fanny Margaret Ellen Thomas – some of the information is completely wrong. She was Baptised as Fanny Margaret Ellen Thomas in the parish church in Dolgelly (now spelled Dolgellau) and on the Register Office site (GRO) as Fanny Margaret Thomas…… nowhere is she referred to as Frances – except in LW’s article (don’t know who LW is – there is no name to take ownership of the article). There are several other inconsistencies but one of the important ones is her cause of death – listed in the article “as a result of a brain haemorrhage and heart failure”
This death is a different Fanny Thomas who died the same year as our Fanny, but lived in 1 Westbourne Terrace, Llanharan, Cowbridge Road and was only 68 when she died.

  2. Correction to my comment above The wrong Fanny Thomas died of a sub-arachnoid haemorrhage, Arteriosclerosis and Cancer of the stomach with secondaries in liver and peritoneum. I could find no way of editing my first comment – when I realised I had put incorrect information myself.
The correct Fannie (as spelled on her death cert.) died of a Cerebral Haemorrhage and Myocardial Degeneration and was living in 2 Picton Avenue, Porthcawl, Glam. My information is from both death certificates.

  3. Thank you for your message regarding Miss Thomas. I put the information together from research carried out by Mr Ryland Wallace. Naturally as a society we endeavour to ensure our material is as accurate as possible.

To that end I obtained a copy of the birth certificate from the government records office – which states:

23rd February 1868 at Eldon Row, Dolgelley – Fanny Margaret Thomas (not Frances, nor including the name Ellen) to Robert Parry Thomas and Annie Bridget Thomas, formerly May. Her father’s profession is given as Bank accountant.

There is a record of a death in July 1952 of a Fannie Margaret Thomas and I obtained a copy of the death certificate which reads

15th July 1952 at 2 Picton Avenue, Porthcawl – Fannie (different spelling to that on the birth certificate) Margaret Thomas, aged 84, spinster, retired school head mistress. Daughter of George May Thomas a bank manager (discrepancy here to the birth certificate)
Cause of death – cerebral haemorrhage and myocardial degeneration
Informant – R Leyshon Thomas, nephew in attendance, 24 Victoria Avenue, Porthcawl

In the meantime I have amended the presentation by removing the name Frances.
Please let the society know of any other amendments including the appropriate source.

    Kind Regards
